Die Wise: A Weeklong Teaching in Bali

FRESH.jpg

Tribal cultures the world over have initiatory work obliging their members to practice aspects of dying throughout their lives. The west has vitamins, support groups and, when all else fails, palliative care. We can do better, and we must. Our grandchildren, and our corner of the world, depend on it. This is a week-long encounter with death phobia, with grief illiteracy, and with what we have done to death, and to dying people, and to our dead. It is a way down and into some the shaded mysteries of human life, the ones that gather at endings. It is a manifesto for sanity and soul in the ending of days.

It is only when we confront our own dying that we truly may live.

This is a deep Immersion for those who feel called to move towards peace-- in living and dying.

About Stephen

spiritual activist, teacher, author
Stephen teaches internationally and is the creator and principal instructor of the Orphan Wisdom School, founded in 2010. With Master’s degrees from Harvard University (Theology) and the University of Toronto (Social Work), he is revolutionizing grief and dying in North America. Stephen is redefining what it means to live, and die well. Apprenticed to a master storyteller, he has worked extensively with dying people and their families, is former programme director in a major Canadian hospital, former assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school, consultant to palliative care and hospice organizations and educator and advocate in the helping professions. He is also a sculptor, traditional canoe builder whose house won a Governor General’s Award for architecture.

He is the author of Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul (2015), Homecoming: The Haiku Sessions – a live recorded teaching (2013), How it All Could Be: A work book for dying people and those who love them (2009), Angel and Executioner: Grief and the Love of Life – a live recorded teaching (2009), and Money and The Soul’s Desires: A Meditation (2002), and contributing author to Palliative Care – Core Skills and Clinical Competencies (2007).

The Orphan Wisdom School is for anyone with a desire to be useful to those who will inherit an endangered and often dangerous world. It is for those who have an instinct and a desire to be an ancestor worthy of being claimed. It is for those wishing to learn something of the skills of grace in a graceless time, of mentorship and fierce and exemplary compassion. It is for elders in training.

Venue Details-- Bali Lush and Bali Eco Stay

Set in the foothills of Batu Karu-- an active volcano on the southern slope of Bali-- this weeklong Immersion is an opportunity to connect with the raw nature of life.  We've chosen a location in remote Bali-- nestled among village life-- set in spectacular nature to support the quality of our time together.

As most of our days will be spent under the guidance (and teaching) of Stephen, when we're not in this "space" we wanted the ability to be able to go for a long walk to a waterfall, sit silently by a creek, go for a swim, or explore the surrounding forests.

With this in mind, this is the perfect location.  Quiet.  Beautiful.  Soulful.

We will be utilizing 2 different (but near to one another) locations: Bali Lush and Bali Eco Stay.

They are intimate and private.

Together, they fulfill all our needs.  Organic, locally-sourced food, lovely rooms (everyone will have their own bed, but rooms will be shared), and intimate spaces for discussions and quiet reflection.

What the Immersion includes?

This is an all-inclusive Immersion (minus flight and visa) from the first to last day.

  • Transport to and from the venue (departing from Ubud on the 27th, and returning on the 3rd)
  • 6 nights accommodation at either Bali Lush or Bali Eco Stay
  • All organic, locally-sourced food (vegetarian, but can accommodate specific requests)
  • Daily yoga and meditation (optional)
  • All excursions-- including a visit to a secluded beach, walks to waterfalls, and a potential climb up the volcano, Batu Karu
  • All teaching with Stephen (roughly 2 "classes" per day)

Right now (until October 15th), we're offering an Early Bird registration rate.  This rate is for a shared room (room sizes are different, and so there will be a different number of people in each room).
