Do you dream of a career as a writer?
Then we have good news!
Introducing: Writing for the soul
A Spiritual Writing Retreat in Bali
with Lissa Rankin
Many of us have a song within us still unsung, but our souls yearn to express themselves through our writing. Maybe you have a blog or you’re working on a book or you’re an avid journal writer who is interested in diving deeper into the realms of writing for and from the soul. Yet blocks can get in the way. Childhood traumas from parents and writing teachers can convince us we’re not good enough to write our truth, or we might have learned that it’s not safe to be vulnerable. Limiting beliefs about our gifts and talents, our right to be heard, and the true magnificence of our Divine selves can get in the way of writing a masterpiece. And Lord knows, we need masterpieces written from the heart now more than ever.
Your voice matters! Your story is medicine for a hurting culture.

Why is lissa leading this Immersion?
Back when I first started writing a book in 2007, I felt very lost and lonely. I wasn’t accustomed to calling upon the kind of discipline that was required of me, as I sat all day by myself and stared at a computer screen. I spent several months experimenting with various writing practices, and I wrote words and words and words, all day long. But none of them rang true. They were hollow words. Words from the mind. Pretty words I thought up and perseverated over, vocabulary words I used liberally to write things that sounded impressive but failed to cut to the quick with their truthfulness.
Then in April of 2008, Nine months after I left my medical practice and one year before I launched my blog, a strong intuitive voice practically forced me to sign up to take my first ever writing retreat at Esalen Institute in Big Sur—Writing From The Heart with Nancy Aronie (who is now a dear friend). This retreat changed my life and gifted me with the writing voice I have been honing ever since. Suddenly, my heart split open and words poured out. It is still one of my deepest gratitudes that my intuition led me to Nancy and Esalen. I can trace the beginning of my current professional life back to what happened in the five days I spent amongst those redwoods in Big Sur and amongst the circle of writers who held space for me as I cried my way to my true voice.
That workshop was a healing for me. Something lost within me came home again, and I began the long journey from the head to the heart that week, a journey I just wrote about in my memoir The Anatomy Of A Calling. During that writing retreat, I got my medically-conservative, shut-down doctor mind blasted open by the kick-ass alternative medicine practitioners who attended the retreat. I found the voice you would now recognize as “Lissa’s writing voice.” I met the woman who became Owning Pink’s first editor. I got introduced to the work of two women who changed my world—Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen and Martha Beck. I found my calling and after hearing the call of my new career and dealing with my initial resistance, I tearfully accepted the call from the Universe.
I found the first footsteps of what became my spiritual path. I wrote the first two chapters of the book I was working on. I met 15 people who became my life preservers at a time when I felt lonely, traumatized, isolated, and scared. My broken heart started to heal in the wake of my Perfect Storm. And I learned the power of vulnerability in writing, both as a means of healing myself and as a means of establishing connection between individuals gathering with the intention of healing.
That’s a lot of growth for one writing retreat!
God willing, that’s the kind of magical, mystical, heart-opening, soul-expanding, life-changing experience I pray we will co-create with YOU. They say that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. I was SO ready for that writing retreat. Because that writing retreat influenced me so profoundly, I’ve been inspired to lead a writing retreat ever since. I know the energy of all of you collectively gathered will ensure that this retreat is as powerful for you as my first writing retreat was for me. YOU are what will make what we co-create possible.

ABOUT THE RETREAT VENUE: Desa Seni
Gandhi’s famous saying: “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Our vision and mission towards the world today. At Desa Seni, we support and strive for an eco-green, sustainable community.
We have built the resort with recycled, repurposed, or sustainable products from local sources. We did not alter the natural land structure and local waterways, but rather respected and worked with the natural elements while protecting and preserving the environment around us. We have implemented measures to best minimize our carbon footprint. We have set aside 40% of our land to organic farming for our restaurant, enabling us to produce approximately 80% of the produce we serve.
We support the local community and economy and therefore only work with local farmers and businesses. Our garbage awareness has minimized the amount of garbage we produce, composting and recycling are big solutions. We use organic bamboo straws for drinks. Our sheet and towel re-use program cuts down on laundry. Organic and bio degradable cleaning and washing products are used and energy saving light bulbs.
We are committed to giving back to the local community and donate resources in order to provide the Pancamaya yoga in Bahasa Indonesian and Balineses Dance. “Making Dreams Come True” a fund raising program where we sponsor, support, and teach at local orphanages along with the work-study program where older orphanage children come to Desa Seni in order to learn and apprentice in different departments and experience a true and responsible working environment.
